Humidity the Invisible Classic Car Storage Enemy

Classic Car at its best

Classic TR at its best

Humidity is the concentration of water vapour present in the air and it’s an important factor for all life on our planet. Water vapor is the gaseous state of water and is generally invisible to the human eye. If there is a lot of water vapour in the air, the humidity is high.

Relative humidity (RH) often quoted in controlled environments including, laboratories, hospitals and factories is the amount of water vapour in the air, expressed as a percentage of the maximum amount of water vapor the air can hold at the given temperature.

Why is temperature and humidity confusing?  Perhaps it’s because as humans we are more sensitive to variations in temperature than we are to changes in humidity. When the temperature is high and the relative humidity is low, evaporation of water is rapid; soil dries, wet clothes dry quickly.

Not ignoring high temperature and high humidity (Hot & Wet) seen in many countries the UK is more typical for when the temperature is low, the relative humidity is high and evaporation of water is slow. When relative humidity approaches 100 %, condensation occurs, the resulting water sits on the vehicle surfaces, leading to the problems. Unfortunately, many of us forget about humidity-based corrosion it’s often invisible to us, catches us unaware until the rust has occurred. We have probably experienced the spanner that has lost its tarnish, gone rusty left in the garage.

To prevent humidity from aiding corrosion we can only keep our precious vehicles in a climate-controlled facility that deals with the correct environment for the wide range of material’s our cars are manufactured from.
